August 24th and 25th 2015 Foster Parent Conference- Making a Difference…Fostering Families

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services Foster Parent Conference will be held August 24th and 25th at the National Center for Employee Development located at 2701 E. Imhoff Road, Norman, Ok 73071.

This is a family friendly event to celebrate and honor Oklahoma’s Resource families! There will be workshops that target many issues faced by foster families and social service professionals who work with youth in foster care. Lunch will be provided both days.

DHS has a limited number of rooms available for those who require overnight accommodations.

Completing the Circle

Completing the Circle will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chickasaw National Cultural Center located at 867 Cooper Memorial Drive in Sulphur, Oklahoma.

Completing the Circle is an annual event that provides roots for Stability and Wings for Success to Native American Children in foster care by raising cultural awareness for DHS and Tribal foster homes.

This event is free and open to foster and adoptive families who provide care for Native American children.

Finding Forever Families 5K

Please join Pottawatomie County DHS and the Shawnee Frontline Church at this 5K race to raise awareness about the need for adoptive homes for children in foster care who are seeking a forever home.

The 5K will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Shawnee YMCA located at 700 Saratoga St, Shawnee, OK 74804

May 17, 2015-Save the Date-Salsa De Mayo

Salsa De Mayo is a fundraising event that will be held on Sunday, May 17th, 2015 from 2:30 p.m.- 4:40 p.m. at The Union Multipurpose Activity Center located at 6836 S. Mingo Road, Tulsa, OK 74133 .

This event will support 111Tulsa, a networking and training organization for the foster care and adoptive community.

There will be taste testing of salsa and other foods, eating contests, face painting, dance lessons, piñatas, inflatables and more!

Bryan County Family Expo

The Bryan County Family Expo is being held Saturday, March 14, 2015 from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM.

The event will be held at the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

This is a family fun day free to all with informational and activities booths for children.

Foster Parent orientation will be held on March 3, 2015 at 6 p.m. at the Angels office located at 1400 S. Broadway in Edmond, OK. March 23, 2015- Collabroshop

Please join us Monday, March the 23rd, from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm at Watchetaker Hall within the Comanche Nation Complex located at 584 NW Bingo Road, Lawton, Oklahoma for our Collabroshop!

The goal of this Collabroshop is to better serve Native American children and families by making sure Tribal families are available for children and teens in need of out-of-home care away from their parents.

All tribal child welfare staff, public and private agency foster care staff, foster care recruiters, and foster parents are invited to this event.

Topics will include:

  • Insight into how the ICWA is impacting the foster care process
  • Learn ways to better support Tribal Children in foster care.
  • Identify all culturally appropriate resources available for children and families
  • Become familiar with culturally respectful recruitment strategies
  •  Develop skills to conduct culturally respectful homestudies and strategies to support Tribal Families through the approval process

 

The workshop is free to attend and lunch will be provided.

Save the Date: Oct. 15, 2015 and Dec. 15, 2015- Coming Together Summit for Autism Cares Community Cares Initiative

The Coming Together Summit for Autism Cares Community Cares Initiative will be held on October 15, 2015 and on December 17, 2015 at the Choctaw Event Center in Durant, Oklahoma.

This event will feature two Nationally Renowned speakers on autism, Dr. Temple Grandlin Ph.D., and Ms. Eustacia Cutler. Dr. Grandlin is one of the most well-known and accomplished adults with autism. Her life story has been turned into an HBO film, “Temple Grandin”. Ms. Cutler is the author of A Thorn in My Pocket and is the mother of Dr. Temple.

Ms. Eustacia Cutler will speak on October 15th and Dr. Temple Grandlin, PhD. will speak on December 17th.

Continuing Education credit hours can be earned for attending both events.

On April 10th and 11th from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. a simulcast will be held to provide information to foster and adoptive parents, professionals and ministry leaders on how to understand and care for children who come from hard places. The information presented will be based on the Trust Based Relational Intervention approach by Dr. Karyn Purvis. The simulcast will be broadcast at the following locations:

March 14, 2015 Fundraising Event

On March 14, 2015, a painting fundraising event benefiting the Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) in Cleveland Co. will be held from 3 p.m.- 5 p.m. at Wine and Palette Studios located at 201 NW 10th Street, Ste. 120, OKC, OK 73103.

Funds raised will support teenagers in foster care through the Oklahoma Independent Living Program. OKIL educates teens on health, education, housing, employment, permanent connections, essential documents and other life skills.
